Vintage Salglazed Bottle
Charente-Maritime region

This stoneware saltglazed bottle was made somewhere in the Charente-Maritime,
during the late 19th century.
This type of bottle was typically used for wine, water, or cold tea,
among the labourers of the region.
There is a tantalizing hint of a salt glaze to the sides and near the rim,
and palm prints can be made out to the sides.
The dents made in the making were probably to ensure that as many bottles
could be fitted into the kiln as possible, or
quite simply to stop them rolling when they were laid down.
Like most French country pottery this beautiful specimen is unmarked.
For an antique this is in very good condition -
a small ancient chip to the rim and some around the base, but no scratches,
or cracks.
10 inches high/25cm high.
