Hors D'oevres Dishes from Buchan Pottery
Portobello, Scotland.

These stoneware hors d'oevres dishes were made at Buchan Pottery
at Portobello in Scotland, sometime before 1971 when the thistle logo ceased to be used.

Buchan was originally established in Portobello in 1867 by Alexander Willison Buchan
on the site of another pottery which had existed since the 1770's.
Shortly after 1971 the pottery was moved to Crieff and so the thistle logo (which included PORTOBELLO) became redundant.

They are both well marked: the Buchan 'thistle' mark which reads "BUCHAN PORTOBELLO SCOTLAND";
'231' and '232' plus M1/72 and M1/66 ... these are style and product codes - but I am not sure which is which;
finally the handpainted H and R will be the painters marks.

Buchan Pottery ceased trading in 2000.
