Vintage graisse pot
Charente-Maritime region

This stoneware pot was made somewhere in the Charente-Maritime,
during the late 19th century/early 20th century.

This type of pot was typically used to store pate
or other 'complete' meat meals.

They were used in abundance in the Charente-Maritime area as a kind of precursor to tinned food.
Basically a meat mixture was cooked and poured into the pots, then the food was initially sealed with animal fat up to just under the rim.
Finally a paper covering would be secured by string.

These were known as 'graisse' (pronounced 'griss') which was local Charantais dialect for a cooked meat pot.

I will be placing more of these on thrownclay - big ones and small ones ... so contact me if you would like some.

Like most French country pottery this is unmarked ... and it is very heavy (hence the postal cost).

This is in excellent condition - no scratches, chips, or cracks.

Diameter (excluding handle): 7.5 inches/19cm.
