Slipware flan dish by Jean Hampton

This moulded earthenware flan dish was made by Jean Hampton at
Hampton Pottery in Penn, Wolverhampton around the mid to late 70's.

Although bird slipware designs are one of her more common devices, it must be said
that each depiction seems to have its own unique character ... and this one
is an exceptional example.

What began as a financial aid to help her daughter through college, ended up
a full time profession which revealed her amazing individual style with slipware.
Please note that this is a moulded dish and not a turned one.
Jean Hampton did not throw any of her pieces, that was left to her friend Tom Beeson,
who still works at Wolverhampton University.
Tragically Jean Hampton died of Leukemia sometime in the 1980's.

Her paper mark "Hampton Pottery Penn" has been removed (leaving just a vague gummed area)
- either when the dish was washed, or when it was used for cooking -
however, the slipware design is unmistakable.
It was also common for the date of manufacture to be inscribed - but not on this piece.
An interesting note is that she sometimes used an incised mark which was a sort of stylised "hp".

Condition: This is in very good condition - with no scratches, or cracks, other than the tiniest fleabite on the rim.
Dimensions: 1.5 inch high/4cm high
Diameter: 11.5 inches/29cm

I am about to write a book on how she came to
produce these incredible
pieces - if you need any information

I have more of Jean Hampton's work which I will post soon,
