Painted Studio Pottery Vase

This stoneware vase was made in Southern Africa.

It has a number of interesting, if not enigmatic, clues to it's provinence.

1. There are two marks - one made by the potter, and possibly the painter ... "L.M."
and the painted leaf mark.
The code is a later addition written in indelible ink (although it it can easily be removed),
and appears to refer to "R" for South African Rand; "34" the number of Rand;
"98" the year in which it was up for retail sale.

2. The painted imagery is fascinating. Possibly a narrative that includes an armed being
(possibly a shape shifting shaman); a four legged beast; and two trees.
