Sarreguemines Majolica oyster plates and serving platter

This set of twelve majolica oyster plates and large serving platter
were produced at Sarreguemines, Eastern France.

Nicolas-Henri Jacobi established a small pottery in the town of Sarreguemines in 1790.
This began a 200 year old enterprise that would turn into
one of the worlds finest makers of french majolica.

The pottery first began using the name Sarreguemines in 1919, having changed hands on a number of occasions.
Between the years 1942 and 1945 the company was entrusted to the very capable hands of Villeroy and Bosch.

Each of the twelve dishes is moulded with a central well and six radiating shell shaped valleys.
The large serving platter is also moulded with a central well and twelve radiating shell shaped valleys.
The complete set is glazed with a brown and olive green tin glaze over white clay.

The stylized S, as seen on this set, was employed in 1973-1982.

Today collectors throughout the world have grown to truly appreciate this kind of pottery.
Even in the present financial climate Sarreguemines continues to command prices that
reflect such wonderful craftsmanship (see the Christies auction February 2011).
